Abner Mares combed his hair differently today. This may seem like a trivial detail. Not to Mares.
It’s all part of his larger plan, to become a star outside the ring as well as in it.
Mares has already earned plenty of accolades as a boxer, winning world titles in three weight classes.
But as he prepares to battle Arturo Santos Reyes on the inaugural Premier Boxing Champions card Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, he has bigger things in mind than just defeating his next opponent.
“I don’t only have Arturo Santos in front of me, I have you guys, ” Mares announced at a press conference Thursday, smiling wide behind large black-framed glasses.
This explains the fresh ‘do. “I tried to look different, tried to style myself,” he said, attempting to leverage his looks as well as his considerable fighting chops to become a mainstream presence.
For his part, Reyes was decidedly more demure as he prepares to fight in the United States for the first time, having to be prompted to speak.
Mares then took it upon himself to compensate for Reyes’ lack of exuberance by supplying enough for both.
He vowed to steal the show Saturday, and made clear his intent to take advantage of the PBC card being broadcast on NBC to a prime-time audience.
“I could be that one guy who could crossover,” Mares said. “I have to be aware of that, and I am. It’s starting.”
