Now that "Showtime" Shawn Porter is a two-time welterweight world champion following his September 8th victory over Danny Garcia, there are only two names on his radar: Errol Spence Jr. and Keith Thurman.
This week on PBC Jabs, we recap our action-packed September 8th Showtime show and new WBC welterweight champ “Showtime” Shawn Porter checks in.
On Saturday, September 8th, PBC returned to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The night began with a heavyweight brawl between unbeaten Polish contender Adam Kownacki and former heavyweight champ Charles Martin. The two sluggers wasted little time feeling each other out as they combined to throw nearly 1400 total punches in their 10-round bout. But it was the Brooklyn-raised Kownacki who scored another victory in front of his home fans, defeating Martin by unanimous decision.
In the co-feature, Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas and Argentina’s Cesar Barrionuevo met in a welterweight eliminator. Ugas controlled the pace, attacking the body and out-boxing Barrionuevo over 12 rounds leading to a dominant UD victory. With this win, Ugas becomes the WBC’s second mandatory opponent for Shawn Porter.
Speaking of Porter, our main event of the evening featured a battle of former world champs as Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter met to fight for the vacant WBC welterweight world title. Porter applied constant pressure throughout, but Garcia was the more precise fighter landing 168 of 472 total punches compared to Porter’s 180 of 742, according to CompuBox. After 12 rounds the judges saw it as a narrow unanimous decision victory for Porter to become a two-time world champion. Joining us this week to reflect on the victory and to reveal his next steps is Porter himself. Click here to watch Porters full, uncut interview.
