Fabian Maidana still has a long way to go to match the boxing accomplishments of his brother, Marcos Maidana, a former two-division world champion who twice took Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the limit. But the kid is at least headed in the right direction.
Looking to continue his upward trajectory, Fabian Maidana (9-0, 6 KOs) will battle Puerto Rican slugger Jorge Maysonet (13-1, 11 KOs) on July 23 in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card from the Scottish Rite Auditorium in San Antonio (NBCSN, 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT). The 147-pound bout is scheduled for eight rounds.
Another eight-round clash is also on the card, featuring undefeated 160-pound prospect Alan Castano (10-0, 7 KOs) of Argentina and Mexican brawler Aaron Garcia (15-5-1, 10 KOs).
Maidana burst on the scene in mid-2014, when he kicked off his career with five victories in six months, the latter four wins coming by knockout—three in the first round, one in the second.
Then the calendar flipped to 2015, and Maidana added two more swift stoppages before ratcheting up the level of competition and earning a pair of eight-round unanimous decisions over Peter Oluoch (August 2015) and Andres Gabriel Amarilla (April 2016).
“I’m very excited to be facing Jorge Maysonet in San Antonio,” Maidana said. “I’ve been training hard, and I’m ready to put my undefeated record on the line and put on a great show.
“There are great boxing fans down in San Antonio, and I look forward to them getting to know me better.”
In Maysonet, Maidana will be facing his most accomplished opponent to date. The 26-year-old son of 1984 Olympian Jorge Maysonet Sr. won his first 11 fights (10 KOs) before dropping an eight-round unanimous decision to Gabriel Tolmaiyan in April 2013. Maysonet has since rebounded with a pair of victories, the most recent being a four-round unanimous decision over Juan Rivas in May 2015.
The fight against Rivas represents Maysonet’s only ring action since August 2013.
“I can’t wait for this fight on July 23,” Maysonet said. “I know Fabian’s brother was a world champion, but this is my time to shine. Fabian’s never faced anyone like me. I have a lot of pride, and I will bring it to the ring.”
