Erick Bone challenged former world champions in his last two bouts, coming up short in both instances. He’s hoping the third time will be the charm when he battles ex-champ Miguel Vazquez on May 28.
Bone (16-3, 8 KOs) and Vazquez (35-5) will square off in a 140-pound fight that serves as the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card from Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio (Fox Sports 1, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).
Miguel Vazquez was originally scheduled to face Felix Diaz, but the 2008 Olympic gold medalist from the Dominican Republic had to withdraw from the bout because of an injury. Bone was announced today as Diaz’s replacement for the scheduled 10-round fight.
Erick Bone entered last year with a 16-1 career record, the lone defeat coming in a narrow split decision against Alberto Mosquera in October 2013. Then last March, the 27-year-old from Manabí, Ecuador, faced former 147-pound champion Shawn Porter as a late replacement and was knocked out in the fifth round.
Bone returned to the ring in December and was knocked down in the eighth round of a 10-round unanimous decision loss to former 140-pound titleholder Chris Algieri. In between the losses to Mosquera and Porter, Bone had won four consecutive fights.
Vazquez, 29, also is coming off a defeat, having dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to former 130-pound champion Algenis Mendez in October.
Vazquez, a native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, won a vacant 135-pound world title by beating Ji-Hoon Kim in August 2010 and successfully defended it six times before losing a split decision to Mickey Bey in September 2014.
