Bio

Jeison Rosario Bio

The Dominican-born Rosario, who now fights out of Miami, shocked the world on January 18, 2020, stopping unified 154-pound World Champion Julian Williams in five rounds to become the new world champion. Now a former titlist, he remains one of the biggest punchers in the sport.

BORN TO BE A FIGHTER

Nicknamed “Banana,” Jeison Rosario received the moniker during his youth in the Dominican Republic for his punching power. In Rosario’s culture, boxers, like baseball players, are assumed to have been granted their prowess from the number of bananas they consume.

That power was evident over the course of Rosario’s initial four professional bouts in 2013, the first three being stoppages in the first, second and third rounds against Confesor Guzman (May 18), Victor Moya (August 9) and Alexis Rafael Castillo Sanchez (September 28).

Rosario scored a knockdown in the fourth and final round of a decision against Franklin Frias on December 16, 2013, went 3-0 (2 KOs) in 2014, and scored first- and third-round knockouts in 2015 opposite Rafael Lorenzo (April 18) and Euri Gonzalez (November 19).

Previously undefeated fighters Rafael Lorenzo (April 15) and Carlos Rafael Cruz (September 23) fell in 2016 to Rosario via second-round TKO and KO, respectively.

Rosario vs. Hernandez 2: February 23, 2019

OVERCOMING SETBACKS

On April 29, 2017, Rosario took on the hard-hitting Nathaniel Gallimore at Sam's Town Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gallimore had simply too much that night, flooring Rosario three times in the sixth to induce the stoppage. Rosario would bounce back with two consecutive wins before settling for a six-round draw versus Mark Anthony Hernandez in February 2018.

On May 26, 2018, Rosario stepped up versus the formidable Justin Deloatch at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi. He looked much improved, dropping Deloatch in the sixth and again in the 10th to win a comfortable unanimous decision. Cards read 97-91, 96-93 and 96-92.

Rosario continued to soar, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over previously-unbeaten Jamontay Clark in August 2018, and then returning to his native Dominican Republic on November 30 to stop Juan Carlos Rodriguez in three rounds.

On February 23, 2019, Rosario took on Mark Anthony Hernandez at the Minneapolis Armory; a rematch of their 2018 six-round draw. Hernandez was no match this time as Rosario stopped him in nine.

The win set up a big test versus veteran slugger Jorge Cota on April 20, 2019, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. It was a slugfest from the opening bell. Rosario had a little more in his tank, winning a 10-round split decision.

“I learned a lot from my first defeat,” said Rosario. “It will never happen again.”

Williams vs. Rosario: January 18, 2020

A WIN FOR THE AGES

Rosario was on fire, but few foresaw what would occur next. On January 18, 2020, Rosario took on WBA/IBF Unified World Super Welterweight Champion Julian Williams at the Liacouras Center Philadelphia. Williams was considered the man in the stacked 154-pound division and a heavy favorite over Rosario.

It didn't appear that way once the bell rang.

Rosario took the fight to the champ, working behind a stiff jab and landing heavy shots to the body. Williams responded with hard rights of his own but Rosario was unmoved.

In the opening minute of the fifth, Williams came forward and backed Rosario into the ropes. But Rosario unfurled a left hook that buckled him. Sensing Williams was in trouble, Rosario pursued Williams who stumbled to the mat. Referee Benjy Esteves generously called it a slip, giving Williams some time to recover. Rosario continued his assault, landing a right uppercut and then a left hook, forcing Esteves to wisely step in and stop it at 1:37 of the fifth round.

“I’m so emotional in this moment right now,” Rosario said. “When I lost my last fight, I said I will never lose again until I become champion of the world and that’s what happened tonight. I came prepared. I knew before the fight that I was going to win it.

“I didn’t see my family and all I did was train. The main motivation are my children.”

Rosario returned to the ring on September 26, 2020, versus WBC counterpart Jermell Charlo in a world title unification bout. Rosario had his moments but it wasn't to be as Charlo won via eighth-round KO. Rosario suffered another defeat, a sixth round KO loss to Erickson Lubin in July 2021, before bouncing back by stopping Reinaldo Gonzalez in two rounds in November 2021.

Now campaigning at middleweight, Rosario took on late-subtitute Brian Mendoza in November 2022. Mendoza proved to be too skilled and too strong, dropping Rosario twice on his way to a fifth-round TKO win.

Rosario announced his retirement afterward.

“I think it’s time to say goodbye,” Rosario said. “I’m not fighting anymore. I’m going to retire. I have accomplished a lot, and it was good, but my career stops here. The most important thing is that I’m still healthy. I feel bad that I couldn’t give the Dominican people the result they hoped for, but I love you all and I thank you for all the support through the years.”
