Rolly Romero Aims to Silence Doubters (Again)

Rolando "Rolly" Romero has never cared much about proving people wrong.

Throughout his career, the outspoken Las Vegas resident has embraced the criticism and continued doing things his own way. Whether it was his unconventional style, his unfiltered personality or the winding road that eventually led him to a world championship, Romero has consistently defied expectations.

Now, he has the opportunity to solidify his place among boxing's elite.

On Saturday, August 22, Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) will make the first defense of his WBA Welterweight World Championship when he faces two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) in the main event of a PBC Pay-Per-View available on DAZN and Prime Video from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event marks another milestone in the landmark partnership between Premier Boxing Champions and DAZN, bringing one of boxing's biggest summer showdowns to fans around the world.

For Romero, however, this fight is about far more than making a successful title defense. A victory over Lopez would represent the defining win of his career and further validate a journey that has been anything but conventional.

Known throughout boxing as one of the sport's most unpredictable personalities, Romero has always backed up his confidence with a willingness to chase the biggest opportunities. This is just one of so many great fights that are gonna come from it."

"Me and Teo aren't friends, he's my little brother," Romero said. "I'd rather go in there against him than anyone else."

Lopez arrives at welterweight seeking to become a three-division world champion after championship runs at lightweight and super lightweight. A victory over a fighter of his caliber would instantly become the signature name on Romero's résumé while silencing those who continue to question whether he belongs among boxing's premier champions.

"A fight's a fight, a sparring session is sparring. Everyone's sparring each other. People get cracked. Now we're doing it under the big lights for a belt," Romero said. "I feel like this fight gives me the opportunity to become a Hall of Famer."

It's a bold statement, but one that reflects Romero's belief in what beating Lopez would represent.

Already one of boxing's most recognizable personalities, Romero has spent years proving that his accomplishments inside the ring deserve as much attention as his memorable quotes outside of it. Of course, Lopez presents perhaps the toughest challenge Romero has faced.

A former unified lightweight champion and WBO super lightweight titleholder, Lopez possesses elite speed, timing and championship experience. He has repeatedly risen to the occasion on boxing's biggest stages and views this fight as his opportunity to launch a new chapter at 147 pounds.

Romero wouldn't have it any other way. His career has never followed the script.
